Capturing the Remarkable Everyday: Preserving Albany's Living History

Everyone has a story. Yet many of those everyday moments quietly pass by without being recorded.

The Ace Camera Club has launched The Remarkable Everyday Project, a year-long community initiative inviting people in Albany to capture the small but meaningful moments of daily life. Through photography and storytelling, the project will reveal the remarkable details often hidden in ordinary days and preserve the voices and experiences of our local community for the future.

More Than Just Photos

While photography is at the heart of what we do, this project is about connection. Primarily focused on creating stories about and by people with disabilities, the project aims to amplify voices that are frequently marginalised. However, the lens is wide: we are inviting a whole range of community members to share their experiences.

Our goal is to create a vivid time capsule of life in 2026. From weekly interviews and photoshoots to community activities, we are documenting the small moments and big achievements that define our everyday lives in Albany.

A Collaborative Effort

This initiative is a collaboration between the ACE Camera Club and Astrid Volzke, a professional photographer and community storyteller from Our Photostories.   Astrid's expertise in visual storytelling ensures that every participant's narrative is treated with dignity and creativity.

An additional opportunity is currently being explored to expand the project's reach. Discussions are underway about a possible collaboration with professional photographer Megan Weight and her "100 Years, 100 Stories" project. As Megan records interviews with older community members, we see a natural fit in merging these intergenerational stories to create a richer tapestry of Albany's history.

Why This Matters

History is often written about the famous and the powerful, but the true soul of a community lies in its everyday members. The object of this project is to inform the public and stakeholders of the critical importance of preserving local history. The life stories, challenges, and achievements of our neighbours are all too often overlooked. By recording them now, we provide future generations with an authentic glimpse of who we were, how we lived, and what we valued.

Albany Entertainment Visit

This visit takes a closer look at the Albany Entertainment Centre, one of the most striking landmarks on Albany’s waterfront. Set on the edge of Princess Royal Harbour, the building’s bold, angular design reflects the light and changing colours of the harbour as you move around it. The walk around the foreshore reveals sweeping harbour views, modern architecture, and the lively atmosphere of the marina precinct. Inside the centre is the Princess Royal Theatre, a 620-seat venue that hosts concerts, theatre, comedy, and touring performances throughout the year. It’s a great place to explore with a camera, where creative design meets Albany’s beautiful harbour setting.

Lake Seppings Visit

A peaceful walk around Lake Seppings reveals one of Albany’s quiet natural treasures. The trail circles the freshwater lake on a gentle path and wooden boardwalks, offering calm views across reeds, open water, and shady groves of trees. It’s a place where nature feels close, with black swans gliding across the lake and waterbirds calling from the reeds. With more than 100 bird species recorded here, the area is well known among local birdwatchers. Along the way, there are plenty of spots to pause, watch the wildlife, and enjoy the stillness of the wetland. Simple, relaxing, and surprisingly close to town, it’s an easy little adventure with a camera in hand.

York Street Visit

A relaxed wander along York Street captures the character and energy of Albany’s historic town centre. The trip follows the gentle slope of the street as it winds toward the harbour, revealing heritage buildings, local shops, and plenty of everyday street life along the way. There are small moments everywhere, interesting architecture, changing light on old façades, and the steady movement of people through the heart of town. It feels like a casual exploration with a camera in hand, stopping whenever something catches the eye. Simple, unhurried, and full of visual detail, this short journey shows why York Street remains one of Albany’s most photogenic spots.
